About Austin, TX

According to statistics, about 110 people move to Austin every day, drawn by the cultural institutions, good music and outdoor spaces the Texas capital has to offer. Incorporated way back in 1839, the city is situated on the Colorado River in Central Texas and is one of the top 50 fastest growing largest cities in the US.

Originally named “Waterloo”, the eclectic and thriving city of Austin remains rich in history. From the Texas State Capitol that anchors downtown to the bronze statue of Stevie Ray that welcomes visitors near the river, the city’s history can be seen in the infrastructure, buildings and the residents who live there today.

Austin, also known as the “Live Musical Capital of the World”, has a plethora of local bands and music venues to entertain huge crowds. Having a vibrant music scene, a number of well-established local music artists are booked regularly to host major musical acts. In addition to the many nightclubs situated on 6th Street, Austin’s music also revolves around music festivals such as South by Southwest, an annual interactive/film/music festival, as well as Austin City Limits, a music and art festival held annually.

The city is considered a major hub for high technology, with thousands of students graduating each year from the University of Texas at Austin to provide a steady stream of employees that help fuel Austin’s defense and technology sectors. Due to the region’s rapid growth, Austin was ranked 14th on the list of Best Places for Business and Careers by Forbes. Some of the largest employers here include Dell, IBM, Apple, Cisco Systems, Facebook, PayPal, Xerox, United Devices, among various others. W

While Austin is one of the most populous cities in the country without a major-league professional sports team, it does hosts a number of minor-league professional teams, including the Austin Aces in World Team Tennis,  the Austin Spurs of the NBA D-League, as well as the Austin Aztex of the United Soccer League. Moreover, the American Swimming Association hosts a number of swim races around the city.

As for education, Austin was voted as the “No.1 College Town” in the US by the Travel Channel, with more than 43% Austinites aged 25 and over holding a bachelor’s degree and 16% holding a graduate degree.  Austin has 69 private schools, 17 charter schools, and 29 public school districts, which caters to the primary and secondary education needs of the residents. The University of Texas at Austin enrolls more than 12,000 graduate students and over 38,000 undergraduate students, offerings programs in law, engineering, music, athletics, arts and more.

There are also plenty of parks and recreational spots in Austin. The city is home to over 50 public swimming pools. The Hippie Hollow Park is particularly famous for its wide range of activities, which include hiking, rock climbing, exploring, kayaking, mountain biking, and swimming. Not only this, the public park also has a long-spanning area, known as the greenbelt,  that forms natural swimming holes such as Campbell’s Hole, Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls.
